Wise Watchful Guardian

The Wise old man and the wise old owl! Brendan Kennelly reminded me once “The old should be treated with respect and should be loved, and above all, they should be listened to, because they have a lot to say and they say it with devilment! A Central-African proverb from the Ntomba people advises that, “A youth that does not cultivate friendship with the elderly is like a tree without roots.” The “wise old owl” symbolises wisdom, patience, and deep observation. The core tenet of this symbolism is that true wisdom comes from listening and observing more than speaking.

Evening in Howth

Howth is an Irish village on the Howth Peninsula, east of central Dublin. The town, steeped in maritime history, offers a diverse array of attractions from its charming harbour to its pristine beaches and flower-lined sea cliffs, Howth is a perfect evening trip when I wish to escape and relax. The lighthouse was completed in early 1818 with the adjacent lighthouse keeper’s house being added in 1821; initially this was single storey, but an additional storey was added in 1856. This is one of my favourite scenes - looking at back of Howth lighthouse with boats and village in background, evening sun and reflections providing an ethereal soothing atmosphere.
