John Norton

I joined the Malahide Camera Club in September 2023 as a Novice photographer, and I was promoted to the Intermediate grade in 2025. The club members are very supportive and generous with their time and give great encouragement to the newer members to develop and enhance their skills. My interest in photography came ‘late in the day’ and was influenced by my wife, Marian, who is an artist. Accompanying Marian to various Plein Air Painting Events throughout the summer months and speaking with other artists I began to develop an interest in looking at things differently and interpreting subjects in a more artistic manner. As one who cannot draw a straight line,  for me the best way to capture an image is through photography. The two genres of photography which I am most attracted to is Street Photography and Architecture. I also enjoy compiling photo books of Special Events for family and friends. I take all my photos using my iPhone. As the saying goes….’the best camera is the one you have with you’.  I can capture a random image at a moment’s notice, and it also allows me to be more discreet when taking Street Photography.

A Rainy Day in Malahide

Sitting in my parked car on a wet and gloomy day in Malahide Village, I began to notice interesting shapes and images created by the rain on the windscreen. I entered this photo in one of the club’s monthly competitions where the theme was ‘In the Rain’ and I was delighted that it was awarded 2nd Place in the Intermediate category. Sometimes capturing a good image is more about observation than the sophistication of the equipment.

Chasing Bubbles in London

I managed to capture this fleeting moment on a recent visit to London. Looking across at St Paul’s Cathedral I suddenly noticed these two children enjoying their time chasing bubbles. To me it speaks to the innocence of children and the simple pleasures of life.
