John McCarthy

For many years I have had an interest in all forms of art, design and photography but with no particular direction, other than taking lots of random photographs; some good, some not so good. Joining the Malahide Camera Club has given me the confidence, direction and knowledge to understand and appreciate the art of photography in a sociable and fun environment. I don’t focus on any particular genre, but tend to take more travel and landscape images than any other. However I am drawn to the emotive impact of a strong and moody monochrome image.

Milford Sound

Milford Sound is probably one of the most photographed locations in New Zealand. The best time to visit is after heavy rain when all the waterfalls cascade into the fjord. With this monochrome image I tried to capture the mood and scale of the place, focusing on the threatening sky and the light reflecting on the waters leading to the lone tree midway into the valley.

Free Delivery

While wandering around the picturesque streets of historical Arrowtown, New Zealand, I came across this old rusting bike advertising the town pharmacy. I captured the image from a low and tight perspective to lead the eye from the pedal to the advertisement, and in the hope that it may give the viewer a nostalgic feeling with the idea of a delivery boy in the distant past using it for free deliveries.
