Presentation by Nigel Motyer

Underwater Photographer, Author of Beneath Irish Seas
19th May 2026, Malahide Parish Centre main Exhibition Room

Nigel Motyer is one of Ireland’s leading underwater photographers, a skill he developed while combining a forty year career in finance with a passion for the underwater world. He first learned to dive as a teenager in 1985 and then first tried his hand at underwater photography shortly after that. By 1991, while still in the early stages of a career in banking he had also qualified as a diving instructor, but it was the creative pull of trying to take pictures underwater that truly grabbed his interest and started a lifelong passion for underwater photography.

Motyer’s fascination with big animals has taken him to extraordinary places and remote locations around the world. Some of his recent photographic travels include a remote bay in West Papua to photograph Whale Sharks, or to the Artic to photograph feeding Orca, or Cuba to photograph saltwater crocodiles. While all big animals are fascinating, Nigel has a particular fascination with sharks and any adventure that’s puts him face to face with sharks will be high on his agenda.
